How Often Should You Change Your AC Filter in Houston?

It is the cheapest, simplest HVAC maintenance task there is — and the most skipped. Your AC filter protects your system and your indoor air quality, but in Houston, it clogs up faster than you might think. Here is how often you should really be changing it.

Why Houston Homes Need More Frequent Filter Changes

Houston is tough on air filters. Our long cooling season means your system runs — and pulls air through the filter — for most of the year. Add in high humidity, oak and pine pollen seasons, and constant construction dust across the metro, and filters load up quickly. A filter that might last 90 days in a mild climate can be clogged in 30 days here.

The 30-to-60-Day Rule

For most Houston homes, check your filter every 30 days and replace it at least every 60 days during cooling season. But the right interval depends on your filter type and household:

  • Basic fiberglass filters (1-inch): Replace every 30 days. They are cheap and catch large particles, but they load up fast.
  • Pleated filters (1-inch): Replace every 60 days. Better filtration, but still check monthly in summer.
  • Thick media filters (4-5 inch): Replace every 6 months. These hold much more dust and are common in newer systems.
  • Homes with pets: Cut the interval in half. Pet hair and dander clog filters remarkably fast.
  • Allergy or asthma sufferers: Change more often and consider a higher-MERV pleated filter to trap smaller particles.
  • New construction or remodeling nearby: Check monthly — construction dust is relentless.

Signs Your Filter Is Overdue

Hold the filter up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it is done — regardless of how long it has been in. Other warning signs: dust building up on vents, the system running longer to cool, higher electric bills, or ice forming on the indoor coil.

What a Clogged Filter Does to Your System

A dirty filter restricts airflow, which causes a cascade of problems: reduced cooling capacity, frozen evaporator coils, overheated blower motors, higher energy bills, and premature system wear. In the worst case, restricted airflow can crack a heat exchanger or burn out a compressor — turning a $15 filter into a $1,500 repair.

Make It a Habit

Set a monthly phone reminder to check the filter. Buy them in multi-packs so you always have one on hand. And if you would rather not think about it, our AC & Heating Tune-Up Special ($120 first system, $80 each additional) includes filter inspection plus a full system checkup, cleaning, and written condition report.
